SABINE VIKSNE
Redress Design Award 2021 Semi-FINALIST
Bio
Sabine is a semi-finalist of the Redress Design Award 2021. She holds a BA Fibre and Textile Art and an MA in Functional Design from the Art Academy of Latvia. She is currently developing her sustainable fashion brand SPIID.
“Sustainable fashion for me means prioritising quality rather than quantity, so garments can be worn much longer. To achieve this, each garment must have a story and each seam, embroidery, or tiniest detail gently cared for with love.” - Sabine Viksne
redress Design Award Collection
For Sabine’s Redress Design Award 2021 collection, ‘Mutatis Mutandis’, she takes inspiration from her matriarchal relatives who passed creative skills through generations and select inherited garments. She achieves a zero-waste collection using folding and weaving, upcycling hospital sheets and embellishes with flowers and embroidered portraits of her family. Sabine utilises cotton bedsheets, and adds colour to her collection with natural dyes made from plants native to her home in Latvia.
