redress Design Award Collection
Aya’s Redress Design Award collection, ‘TRASH TALK’, explores the contrast between the fantasies reflected on social media and the reality of daily life. Aya sources fabric waste including wedding dresses from shuttered businesses, discarded leather belts, and leftover lycra from a swimwear brand to turn trash into treasure. Her collection is crafted with a variety of techniques including embroidery, patchwork, repainting, and digital and manual prints. Aya uses natural dyeing and printing processes free from harmful chemicals, and also designs free from trends so that her garments can last. She reuses leftovers of different sizes to minimise waste, such as in her quilted scarf made using denim patchwork and deadstock buckles.
