Bio
Melody Zhang is a Semi-finalist of the Redress Design Award 2023.
“I discovered joy in thrifting and upcycling, particularly when finding ‘treasure’ in someone else’s ‘trash’, and using my creativity to transform unwanted goods into modern luxury items.” – Melody Zhang
redress Design Award Collection
Melody’s Redress Design Award collection, ‘Realm of Neptune’, presents a post-apocalyptic vision where humans have vacated Earth in search of a new sanctuary on Neptune. Her collection features puffer jackets stuffed with leftover fabric scraps, and detachable sleeves for versatility. To create texture and dimension with minimal waste, Melody uses textile manipulation techniques such as smocking, beading, netting, and stitching. She repurposes waste materials such as discarded foam pillows and abalone shells gathered from local restaurants. Melody also creates a 6-in-1 convertible and reversible ‘MOoomi’ accessory that can be used as a beanie, scarf, or shoulder bag in blue or white, maximising its usability
