redress Design Award Collection
Scarlet’s Redress Design Award collection, ‘Kimo-no waste’, is inspired by the cyberpunk aesthetic. Scarlet combines secondhand Japanese silk kimonos with an innovative agar-based bio-material, creating a conversation between tradition and high-tech. Though kimonos can be only worn under certain circumstances, these remade clothes are designed for daily life, with mix-and-match pieces suitable for various occasions. To reduce waste from fabric off-cuts, she incorporates the seams and narrow widths of the kimonos into the designs. The pure silk is recyclable at end of life, while the agar elements are detachable and can be melted in hot water and reformed into new shapes.
