Redress Design Award 2020 Finalists Photoshoot - Behind The Scenes

Elements from the Earth provide the backdrops for the stunning photoshoot featuring the work of this year’s international cohort of Redress Design Award Finalists. Projections of dramatic night skies, coastlines and still ocean waters reiterate the importance of preserving and protecting this beautiful planet and reflect perfectly the designers to address these issues in their work. From up-cycling to zero waste, each ensemble - received in Hong Kong via a carbon neutral shipment by long-time competition sponsor UPS - showcases yet another creative technique to transform fashion’s waste into stylish clothing.

The shoot, which presents the two categories of menswear and womenswear - a first in the competition’s history - is styled and photographed by two leading Hong Kong creatives Kieran Ho and Karl Lam. Simple accessories and minimalist yet strong hair and makeup, expertly put together by returning artists Marco Chan (for KMS) and Vic Lai (for Popstar Cosmetics), let the garments speak for themselves.

“When we initially conceptualised this shoot, we thought of juxtaposing the clothing with different scenery from nature as well as urban environments,” says Kieran. “But, as the shoot went on, we only used nature because it became quite interesting how these man-made things were placed against natural forces.” And that holds strong resonances for everyone involved in the Redress Design Award. As Keiran points out: “During this time of the global pandemic, the one thing that is still certain is nature.”
