Applying theory to real industry challenges

Throughout the Redress Design Award Grand Final Week this September, we curated two immersive challenges for our finalists with key industry partners who share our vision, to extend their  knowledge and experience in circularity and sustainability for fashion via real industry challenges.

MOVE TO NATURAL

The ‘icebreaker Move to Natural Challenge’ was held in partnership with VF Corp’s Icebreaker and tasked the finalists to design a solution for a 100% natural fibre hoodie with the aims of re-using or minimising textile waste in the icebreaker supply chain, from sheep to shirt with icebreaker team experts on hand to guide their process. The winning team - consisting of Kristina Vyzaite, Jin Pei-Wen and Liu Feng - won the challenge by demonstrating a deep understanding of the brief, and impressing the judges with an outstanding business concept which brings the icebreaker purpose to life through responsible design, naturally innovative thinking and waste considerations.

VIRTUAL SAMPLING TO TACKLE WASTE

In partnership with Browzwear and TAL Apparel, the ‘Digital Zero-Waste Challenge’ tasked the designers to work with digital design and sampling to demonstrate their zero-waste and upcycling skills, putting deadstock fabric back into the production line, with the Browzwear team having delivered training on the their VStitcher software in advance of the challenge. Finalists also received a factory tour of TAL Apparel and insights into their manufacturing process, and heard from Redress Design Award 2020 menswear winner, Ngoc Ha Thu on her experience in zero-waste design.

The winning team - Jessica Chang, Lili Sipeki, Kristina Vyzaite and Tulika Ranjan - stood out to the judges with their efficient and sophisticated use of zero-waste pattern making (their virtual sample shown here)  and each took home a subscription to Browzwear and  access to Browzwear University to further enhance their virtual sampling skills.
