Design challenges explore waste innovation and digital zero-waste solutions

NEW on the Redress Academy: explore two insightful case studies, joining our Redress Design Award 2022 finalists as they engage in a series of exciting design challenges in the leadup to their Grand Final Fashion Presentation.

In the Digital Zero-waste design challenge, hosted by TAL Group and Browzwear, designers used Browzwear’s 3D digital design software to turn TAL’s factory fabric waste into digital fashion pieces. Such skills could help dramatically reduce sampling wastage and improve efficiency, and are particularly in demand in the post-pandemic, remote-working world. The winning team, with finalists Drina Marco, Federico Badini Confalonieri, and Nawoda Bandara, stood out to the judges for their clever zero-waste pattern-making.

The icebreaker® ‘Move to Natural’ challenge, hosted by VF Corporation, tasked the finalists to design a solution for a 100% natural fibre product made from textile waste from the icebreaker® supply chain, supporting the brand’s ongoing efforts to eliminate unnecessary plastic from performance apparel. The winning team, with finalists Lívia Castro and Federico Badini Confalonieri joined by Hong Kong fashion students Natalie Jim Yu-Ching and Hanna Wong Chin-Wa, impressed the judges with their innovative use of formerly waste materials.

In addition to the design challenges, finalists also participated in “Meet The Experts” masterclasses with industry experts, including TAL and Tencel™, who shared insights on manufacturing and fibre technologies respectively.

Each of the challenges are now available as case studies for all aspiring designers and those interested in circular fashion to build their knowledge on the Redress Academy, our online learning platform with case studies, video guides, and more.
