From Chile with a Japanese touch, Cris Miranda wins the People’s Choice Award 2022

Following thousands of votes cast from around the world, a favourite among the 30 semi-finalists has emerged from public opinion. The Redress Design Award 2022 People’s Choice winner, guaranteed a place in the Grand Final, is Chilean designer Cris Miranda.

Cris’ unisex collection, ‘「RE」COLLECT ’, is inspired by the designer’s interaction with Japanese culture through three traditional aesthetic concepts: wabi-sabi, mono-no-aware, and miyabi. The collection upcycles kimono and obi silks and their mother’s favourite leather jackets. After a drought precipitated water rationing in their hometown of Santiago, Cris shifted from dyeing processes to textile manipulations and hand painting. Cris also emphasises using the highest quality materials they can find to increase the longevity of their garments.

Cris shares, “I’m a sustainable fashion designer because I believe in the power of dressing sustainably and the needed change it represents.”

The People’s Choice Award winner will also receive a JUKI overlock sewing machine and a digital copy of the Bloomsbury book Stories of Fashion, Textiles and Place: Evolving Sustainable Supply Chains by Leslie Davis Burns and Jeanne Carver.

Stay tuned for Cris’ collection debut along with that of the nine other finalists in the Grand Final Fashion Presentation in mid-September!
