Alumni Collection Addresses Plastic Waste with Innovative Packaging Solutions

Collaboration between The R Collective and Avery Dennison champions digital labels and plastic-free garment bags

In an effort to reduce waste and increase transparency in the clothing consumer experience, five alumni of the Redress Design Award are championing innovative packaging solutions that offer alternatives to single-use plastic.

Through their ‘REVIVAL’ spring/summer womenswear collection launched this spring in collaboration with The R Collective, the social impact business inspired by Redress that upcycles luxury textile waste, alongside education partner Avery Dennison, a global leader in providing physical and digital labelling solutions, the partnership repackages the issue of plastic waste.

Plastic-free garment bags eliminate the need for single-use plastics, a tricky and widespread issue within the fashion industry. While single-use plastic bags are convenient, durable, and transparent, Avery Dennison’s innovative new plastic-free garment bags offer the same benefits while also being recyclable. The R Collective-branded ecommerce mailers made from recyclable kraft paper and carbon-neutral shipping with UPS also add to the collection’s sustainability.

In addition, a QR code in the label invites consumers to be part of the sustainable journey by directing them to a website that shares how the products are reducing fashion’s environmental impact and offers clothing care techniques that can minimise consumers’ environmental impact.

“We’ve enjoyed working closely with the Avery Dennison team to ensure that our brand story is told every step of the way through the digital labels and digital packaging solutions,” shares Christina Dean, founder and CEO of The R Collective.

‘REVIVAL’ is the work of five Redress Design Award alumni: Chan Meiyan, winner of the 2020 Alumni Prize and 2019 Hong Kong Best Runner-up Prize; Tylar Whitfort, winner of the Redress Design Award 2018; Jesse Lee, winner of the Hong Kong Best and Second Prizes 2018; Wen Pan, a 2016 finalist; and Grace Lant, winner of the Hong Kong Best Prize 2020. The collection, inspired by nature and its transformation, is available for purchase globally on TheRCollective.com.
