Redress Alumni showcased at Paris Olympics 2024
Redress was invited by France-based NGO, Universal Love to showcase the works of 11 Redress Alumni designers from 9 regions around the world who have been challenged to transform sporting material waste into parures — pieces of wearable art — to be displayed during the 2024 Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games this summer. Each of our Alumni designers has selected their waste material from a sport personal to them or typically played in their country. The results are a varied selection of aesthetic and sustainable techniques. Read more here.
Plus, Kévin Germanier designed all the costumes for the closing ceremony of the Paris Olympics 2024, held on 11 August. The ceremony at the Stade de France featured over a hundred performers, acrobats, dancers, and circus artists, with part of the show taking place in the air. Masterminded by artistic director Thomas Jolly, the costumes and lighting effects took spectators on a journey through time, from past to future.
Pei-Wen Jin x UNIQLO: ocean-inspired embroidery for clothing longevity
Redress Alum Pei-Wen Jin was selected from a shortlist of 24 Redress Alumni to be part of an Artist-at-Sea mission last summer, embarking on a six-day scientific expedition focused on the pressing issue of microplastics. Working alongside other artists and marine scientists aboard the research vessel Falkor (too), Pei-Wen’s journey in the Pacific near the Panama Canal was part of the Ocean Rising initiative with Schmidt Ocean Institute and Nekton, which connects culture with the ocean.
Inspired by her time at sea, Pei-Wen partnered with UNIQLO to create a showpiece as well as smaller designs for consumers to add to their garments, inspiring longevity through repair, refresh, or remake. Read more here.
Exploring Clothing Waste from Redress’ Takeback Programme
As part of our ongoing work to reduce fashion's waste, we gathered a group of our talented Redress Alumni in Hong Kong to explore one of our very own waste streams: garments unfit for wear and destined to be downcycled, collected through our Takeback Programme.
Eric Wong and Pat Guzik were featured in the ‘Pass the Baton’ exhibition by the Hong Kong Design Centre, and their upcycled creations made from Redress’ takeback waste retailed at The Barn at D2 Place.
Redress also tasked Lola Clavel to create a useful item upcycled from Redress’ takeback waste. Her resulting limited-edition creations serve not only as bookmarks, but can also be used as coasters. They can be purchased through partner Gentle Books, with funds supporting both Redress and education charity EmpowerU.
Kévin Germanier at Paris Fashion Week
Kévin Germanier once again brought his upcycling flair to Paris Fashion Week with his AW24–25 collection, ‘Les Épineuses’. Watch the full show below:
“This season I wanted to explore a darker version of myself,” shared Kévin. “It is our first show and I turned 30 on 16 February, so I deeply wanted to make sure that whatever I show, it is 100 percent myself — and this includes a little bit of darkness. It will be less ‘princess-y’ and more… alien!”
