Christian Jay Martin was a finalist of the Redress Design Award 2018 and was also a semi-finalist of the 2017 cycle. He has founded his own upcycling label, CJ MARTIN, which fuses subtle craftsmanship with its minimalist-utilitarian aesthetic. He holds a Diploma in Fashion Design and Marketing from the SoFA Design Institute in Manila, the Philippines.
To me, sustainable fashion is about creating a positive balance in the design process by innovating with the excess we already have, while protecting depleted resources. It is a very challenging yet fulfilling form of fashion because it requires research, collaborative work and transparency. I believe that it is not too late to take action to slow down climate change. - CJ Martin
redress Design Award Collection
Inspired by time-lapse images of receding and calving glaciers captured in the environmental documentary ‘Chasing Ice’, CJ aims to shine a light on the detrimental effects of climate change through his Redress Design Award submission. He applies the design techniques of up-cycling and reconstruction to the contrasting natural and man-made fibres of secondhand denim jeans and polyester curtains and uses a colour palette that mirrors the tundra surrounding the glaciers.
