Redress Design Award 2018 Semi-FINALIST
Bio
Elif Tekcan was a semi-finalist of the Redress Design Award 2018 and has a PhD in Design Studies at the İzmir University of Economics, Turkey. Elif also holds a BA degree in Fashion Design from the same university.
Sustainable fashion enables us to rethink our relationship with ourselves, other members of society and with the environment. By transforming waste into high-end products, it challenges the prevailing value systems by showing the true cost of things we purchase, and by giving a second life to clothes that are supposedly at the end of their life-cycles. It also challenges the motives and the methods of the fast fashion industry by remodelling production processes in promotion of responsibility, kindness and mindfulness. - Elif Tekcan
redress Design Award Collection
For her Redress Design Award collection, Elif was inspired by art movements that bring life to urban spaces through colour, such as the yarn installations of Gabriel Dawe and Megan Geckler. She applied the techniques of zero-waste and up-cycling to textile waste from a variety of sources, and then folding, pleating and laser cutting to create geometric forms.
