Tulkia Ranjan

Redress Design Award 2021 People’s Choice

Meet The Designer

I love to research as part of my creative process and have visited Panipat – one of the world’s largest importers of secondhand clothes, big garment factories in Bangladesh, through to remote weavers in Indian villages. I have seen firsthand the real problems calling for real solutions and my dream is to be a part of this change.

Bio

Tulika was awarded the Redress Design Award 2021 People’s Choice Award. She was a textile and accessories Designer at Mela Artisans, but currently she is apart of the Redress Designer Residency Programme with her exhibition of art called ‘WakamonoT: Memories We Carry’. It comprises discarded garments from Redress’ Takeback Programme — and the pieces take inspiration from the ancient folk craft of Oriental Knotting — the Japanese concept of “wakamono” which embodies the spirit of youth. The art pieces serve as a gentle invitation to reflect upon formative journeys.

She holds a Bachelor of Design in Fashion Design from the National Institute of Fashion Technology, New Delhi, India.

Focus

Redress Design Award Collection

Tulika aims to provoke conversation about mental health through her Redress Design Award collection, ‘Just an Outlier’. She celebrates rebels with a cause, who don’t conform to the fabric of society and their grit that can lead to them being propellers of systemic change. With a focus on upcycling and zero-waste design techniques, Tulika sources undyed fabrics to ensure no trace of chemicals and upcycles them taking inspiration, both aesthetically and metaphorically from the Rorschach test, applying hand screen printing, inkblots and applique.
